Paris/Idar Oberstein

Claire Normand is a gemstone carver currently in Idar Oberstein in Germany.

After studying engraving and modelling at the Ecole Boulle in Paris, Claire has been initiated to lapidary technics with artists in China and in New Zealand.

Every creation is initiated by a meditative contemplation of the stones and a fantasy about its hidden secrets.

Claire’s desire is to show the beauty of the stones by enhancing their unique patterns and flaws. She is seeking life and breath in what seems to be inert. Movements are crystallized in stones.

Rejecting the mass-production, all her jewelry are unique pieces. She is primarly working on bespoke orders.
Claire  is doing demonstrations of engraving in museums, such as the Mint of Paris, and offers her services for jewelers and fashion designers.

Claire is using lapidary and glyptic technics to create her pieces.  Gemstones are carved by abrasion, which means every thing that is carved is definitive.
Diamond tools are used to cut and carve and then successive abrasives are used to polish the stones.
